Home and indoor use

Folding electric wheelchairs for home and indoor use.

The model that suits a home is chosen by three measurements taken in that home, not by the brochure: the narrowest clear doorway, the tightest turning space, and the highest threshold the chair has to cross. Get those three numbers and the choice narrows quickly, because the differences between the MiniRedone models that matter indoors are the folded height, the net weight and the front-end behaviour over steps — not the colour or the trim.

Measure three things before you compare models

Measure the clear opening of the narrowest door on the route, from the door stop to the frame, with the door open at ninety degrees. Then measure the tightest place the chair has to turn, usually a hallway end, a bathroom or a lift lobby, and note the distance from wall to wall. Finally, measure the height of every threshold, sill or step the chair will cross, including a balcony door rail or a bathroom lip.

Write the three numbers down in millimetres and compare them with the model’s specification sheet rather than with a photograph. Overall width with the armrests fitted, overall length and the height of the front casters are the figures that decide whether a chair passes a door, completes a three-point turn and climbs a sill. Where a measurement sits within a few centimetres of the limit, it is worth asking us to confirm the figure for the exact configuration you intend to order, because a different armrest or footrest changes the envelope.

Floor transitions, casters and the front suspension

Indoors, comfort is mostly decided at the front end. The MiniRedone range uses pneumatic front-fork suspension and caster wheels, and every model carries anti-tip wheels at the rear. Those parts affect how a chair rides over a threshold, a tile lip or a lift door track, and how it behaves when it is pushed backwards over a drop. Two models with the same motor and battery can feel quite different on the same floor because of them.

Propulsion is the same across the range: two 350W brushless hub motors, a maximum user weight of 150 kg and a range of about 30 km, which is well beyond typical indoor use. Where a threshold is too high to cross, a short ramp is the usual answer, and the ramp article below explains how slope and available run interact. Measure the sill before ordering a ramp; a ramp that is too steep is worse than no ramp at all.

Storage between uses, and charging indoors

Folded, the chair occupies a footprint of 830 to 850 mm by 675 mm, with a packed height between 780 mm and 1250 mm depending on the model. That is the number to compare with the inside of a hall cupboard or the space behind a door. MiniRedone-IV folds tall and narrow at 1250 mm, which suits a cupboard with height but little floor space; the I-W, I-BR and I-R fold lowest at 780 mm, which suits a space under a shelf or in a car boot.

Charging is four to six hours from empty on the supplied charger, and the battery is built into the chair rather than being a removable case. That means the chair charges where it stands, so the position of a socket along the route matters as much as the size of the storage space. If a chair will go weeks without use, the storage article below covers the preparation; we do not publish a state-of-charge figure for long storage, and the manual for the specific model is the document that governs it.
